The Boardman River Watershed
The Boardman River Watershed encompasses 287 square miles in the northwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The river flows through Kalkaska and Traverse City and empties into West Grand Traverse Bay. It contributes approsimately one-third the water volume to the bay, which was recognizedin 1998 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as one of the most pristine freshwater bays in the world.
The proposed project consists of removal of four dams on the Boardman River:
- the Union Street Dam at river mile 1.5,
- Sabin Dam at 5.3,
- Boardman Dam at 6.1, and
Brown Bridge Dam at 18.5.
