What will our community do with the dams on the Boardman River in northwestern Michigan? Help decide.

Boardman Dam
Boardman Dam

Due to impending regulatory issues, Traverse City Light and Power decided that continuing to generate hydroelectricity has become too expensive and has relinquished its licenses to generate hydroelectric power at the Boardman, Brown Bridge and Sabin dams.

These dams are among four that currently impound water on the main stem of the Boardman River. Because the fourth, the Union Street Dam, is located within the general project area and is of similar age and structure as the other dams, it has also been incorporated into this project.

The owners of the dams, the City of Traverse City and Grand Traverse County, are committed to involving the public to help determine the fate of these dams. The Boardman River Dams Committee has been established to engage all interests so that the ultimate decision is based upon an exhaustive assessment of public concerns, issues and questions.

This web site will provide information about the project as it becomes available and will be used to facilitate public participation. Please let us know how we can make this site more useful to you by sending your suggestions to info@theboardman.org!

This is the project archive. See current information here.

The Boardman River Dams Project engages all interests to recommend the fate of four dams on the Boardman River in Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties.
